The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve reduces the formation of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by recirculating some of the spent gas back into the engine cylinders. This lowers peak temperatures inside the cylinder, reducing the rate of NOx formation. If the valve does not open wide enough, insufficient recirculation occurs, producing pollutants.
