Pipeline: the main challenges

In the mid-stream and oil & gas sector, there is a key player in the efficient management and distribution of energy resources: pipelines. This network of technically advanced pipelines spanning thousands of kilometers is not only the backbone of oil and natural gas transportation, but also underscores the crucial importance of maintenance and safety. In their energy resource distribution operations, pipelines face multiple technical, environmental and nature challenges. Some of the most important include:

  • Corrosion: which can compromise the structural integrity of pipes;
  • Erosion: caused by material flow and can lead to tube wear;
  • Third-party incursions, such as unauthorized excavations that may damage the lines;
  • Internal pressure management issues: very important to prevent leakage or explosion;
  • Environmental challenges: for example, climate variations, which can affect pipeline operations and safety.

The benefits of proper pipeline lubrication

To reduce the challenges pipelines face on a daily basis, lubrication is a critical step that can even determine the success or failure of entire operations. Some key functions of proper lubrication are:

  • Providing a constant coefficient of friction: on mating surfaces, this allows designers and applicators to minimize the complexity of obtaining preload forces and torque specifications for connectors;
  • Limit the effects of temperature and load variations, reducing fatigue failure rates;
  • Forming barriers between substrates and the oxygen gas layer; Preventing unwanted fouling on thread surfaces;
  • Provide protective layers to mating surfaces;
  • Reduce the effects of oxide layer depletion by reducing the occurrence of fretting, galling, seizing, and shear;
  • Reduce exposure to corrosive, hydrogen-rich environments with poorly melting metals,reducing stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen and weld embrittlement.

A crucial aspect in optimizing pipeline performance concerns the proper management of the pressure of the transported gas or liquid. It is widely known that maintaining a high tightness of connections, such as flanges, and proper valve adjustment allows for increased pressure within the system resulting in improved operating efficiency and increased gas flow rate. In other words, maintaining optimal connection tightness and precise pressure regulation allow the pipeline’s transport capacity to be maximized, increasing the pressure of the transported gas and thus improving the overall efficiency of the system.
