SAERTEX® JEC Innovation Award 2023: materials for the roof of Real Madrid stadium

SAERTEX® GmbH & Co. KG of Saerbeck, Germany, supplied the fiberglass and carbon fiber materials for the support beams of the roof structure. Together with his client, he received the JEC Innovation Award for this project.

SAERTEX
and other partner companies triumphed in the “Construction and Civil Engineering” category at this year’s JEC Innovation Awards. This is the third time in the 25-year tradition of the competition that SAERTEX is among winners. He had, in fact, already won the award in 2014, in the “Renewable Energy” category with the MAPRETEC project and in 2017 in the “Marine” category for “Fjord Vision.”

The time-line of the work

The renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu has been ongoing since 2019. In February 2023, the 36 lightweight beams that will serve as support for the movable roof structure were installed, which, thanks to materials provided by SAERTEX®, will protect the entire arena from the effects of wind and weather.

Characteristics of SAERTEX® materials

With a length of 25 meters each, the beams are connected to each other in groups of three to form 75-meter-long supports. To make them lighter and more energy efficient, they were manufactured using composite materials from SAERTEX®, fabricated with carbon fiber and glass reinforcements-so-called non-crimped fabrics-balsa wood and epoxy resin, through the vacuum infusion process.
