ARALDITE® 2081: a new high-performance acrylic adhesive

To provide high-quality products in the most profitable way possible, it is critical to use a structural adhesive that increases productivity, provides reliable results, and safeguards the health of operators. Until now, production specialists in the wind transportation and general assembly sectors have been limited to adhesive products with problems of odor, flammability, and high toxicity profiles.

For this reason, Huntsman has launched a new product on the market, The ARALDITE® 2081 acrylic adhesive.

Unlike many other structural acrylic adhesives, this one offers an effective solution to multiple challenges without compromising performance. ARALDITE® 2081 is a new low-odor, non-flammable adhesive that complies with EN 45545-2. This fast-curing two-component acrylic adhesive is suitable for bonding a wide variety of plastics and other substrates, except polyolefins and low surface energy materials.

ARALDITE® 2081: The Innovation

ARALDITE® 2081 has high strength and good flexibility with low odor. This multipurpose acrylic adhesive features a 10-minute open time for quick assembly operations on a wide range of substrates. Its main features are:

  • Low odor: 90% lower odor than MMA products, this adhesive helps increase the well-being and satisfaction of end customers and operators, especially in enclosed work environments.
  • Non-flammability classification: (flash point >95°C) ARALDITE® 2081 helps minimize costs for safety training, storage, transportation and equipment.
  • No primer: Compared with polyurethane (PU) and epoxy product adhesives, this adhesivon does not require a primer. This reduces costs and application time while providing the same bond strength.
  • Low toxicity profile: ARALDITE® 2081 adhesive has an improved GHS (Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) classification, which saves on the cost of personal protective equipment.

An extensive range of acrylic adhesives

ARALDITE® 2081 thus expands Huntsman’s range of acrylic adhesives. In addition to this adhesive, ARALDITE® 2080, a low-odor, nonflammable, primerless structural acrylic adhesive with exceptional bond strength and fast reactivity time, is also on the market.

Both adhesives solve many of the common problems manufacturers have faced using methyl methacrylate (MMA), polyurethane (PU) and other traditional adhesive products. These include aggressive odor, flammability issues, high toxicity profiles, and increased production time for surface preparation, all of which can contribute to increased costs and reduced productivity.

The application of ARALDITE® 2081: bonding of internal and dissimilar parts on trains

Bonding different materials for small and medium-sized interior parts inside railway cars traditionally requires different adhesives, all with their own conditions of use.

ARALDITE® 2081 adhesive is a complete and fully approved solution for this application, with strong adhesion to metals, composites and thermoplastics.

This low-odor, low-toxicity, fast-curing adhesive offers good adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, including plastics (e.g., ABS, polycarbonate, etc.). This results in less application complexity, easier inventory management and less operator training. The elongation of more than 60% also ensures durability and resistance to dynamic loads.

Main benefits:

  • Complete solution for various materials (including plastic)
  • Outstanding bonding for dissimilar substrates
  • Low odor compared with MMA (methyl methacrylate) products
  • Stretch rate of more than 60%
