MOLYKOTE® G-5025: Grease for new brake systems

With the global push toward electric vehicle (EV) adoption, OEMs are looking for new ways to adapt their technologies to EVs, including the braking system.

The application

A global manufacturer of brake systems, has begun developing its Wired Combinated Brake System (WCBS) a new closed-box Electro Hydraulic Brake (EHB) system. The system has the advantage of being smaller and lighter, with fewer parts than conventional brakes and two-box EHB systems. It can be used on both new electric vehicles and conventional vehicles with combustion engines.

The request

The customer was looking for a lubricant for its new control brake system (WCBS) that would be compatible with rubber and plastic and meet endurance tests over a wide range of service temperatures. Initially the customer , had chosen a polyalkylene glycol (PAG)-based lubricant, but this was unable to meet the requirements. The lubricant worked well at temperatures as low as -30°C, but the brake system showed reduced output pressure. The manufacturer had also stated that energy loss occurring in lithium-ion batteries was a significant problem, especially in winter.

The Solution: MOLYKOTE® G-5025

Mascherpa’s team worked with the manufacturer’s EHB system project manager to understand the technical requirements of the project and recommend a solution. The lubricant should have withstood millions of load cycles at service temperatures ranging from -40°C to +120°C. Laboratory testing of showed that a particular lubricant, MOLYKOTE® G-5025 Grease, was compatible with various rubber/elastomer (e.g., EPDM) and plastic substructures, so the team felt it would provide the perfect protection required by the application. Subjected to the test, MOLYKOTE® grease reduced the pressure gap, meeting the manufacturer’s expectations. The output pressure of the EHB system was more stable during temperature changes than with the previous lubricant. The grease contributed to the safe operation of the brake unit and reduced energy consumption, especially at low temperatures.

Typical Properties of MOLYKOTE® G-5025 Grease

Reliable plastic-compatible lubrication and low-temperature performance

MOLYKOTE® G-5025 Grease was developed for lubrication of overrun clutches in starting engines, but has proven to be a high-performance lubricant over wide temperature ranges-not only in starting engines, but also in other automotive applications with high demands. It shows good anti-wear properties and offers resistance to oxidation and moisture that can extend the life of the component.
