I conformal coatings are a key solution for ensuring the protection and longevity of printed circuit boards (PCBs) in industrial applications, automotive, electronics and more. These thin, conformal coatings are designed to prevent corrosion, protect against moisture, chemicals, and extreme temperatures, ensuring high performance and long-term reliability.

We invite you to watch the video of the presentation given by our expert Enrico Quagliato during the Focus on PCB 2024 exhibition:

Our innovative solutions to meet the challenges of the hydrogen industry

From Sept. 11-13, we talked about how the decarbonization strategy aimed at reducing global pollution identifies hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, since it can be produced in some cases with renewable energy and then transported, stored and used as a gas.
Italy turns out to be a promising market for hydrogen development considering the availability of renewable sources and a very advanced gas transportation system. In an advanced world aiming at low emissions and energy that is as green as possible, hydrogen is one of the most innovative and promising energy solutions. However, this resource presents complex technical challenges, which Mascherpa, with its 120 years of experience, proposes to solve with cutting-edge, technologically advanced approaches. Watch the video recounting our participation in Hydrogen Expo.

What is conformal coating and why use it?

A conformal coating is a thin layer of polymer applied directly to PCBs to protect them from harsh environmental factors. Its ability to conform to the shape of the board makes it ideal for applications where electrical insulation, corrosion protection and mechanical strength are essential. Its main advantages are:

  • Total protection: prevents corrosion due to moisture, salt spray and chemical contaminants.
  • Electrical insulation: prevents the propagation of unwanted currents on PCB surfaces.
  • Durability: extends the operating life of the board even in extreme environments.

What must a good conformal coating PCB ensure?

Reliability and performance are the two pillars on which a quality conformal coating is based. Essential features include:

  • Dielectric strength to prevent electrical discharge.
  • Flexibility to withstand thermal cycling without cracking.
  • Perfect adhesion to ensure protection on any PCB surface.
  • Moisture barrier and salt spray resistance to prevent PCB corrosion and provide adequate protection
  • UV and chemical resistance to operate in harsh environments.
  • Resistance to solvents and corrosive gases.

The different types of conformal coatings

There are different types of coatings, each with specific properties:

  • Siliconics: ideal for high temperature environments.
  • Acrylics: good for resistance to salt spray.
  • Polyurethanes: suitable for chemical protection and flexibility.
  • Hybrids: combine the best properties of multiple materials for customized solutions.

How to apply conformal coating?

Application methods vary according to requirements and the type of coating:

  • Spray or dip for even coverage.
  • Selective application to protect only specific areas of the PCB.
  • Deposit or brush for touch-ups or small areas.

Each method has advantages and disadvantages, but all share the goal of providing reliable and efficient protection.
