Case Study: Strengthening the structural integrity of the battery pack with DuPont ™ BETAMATE 2090

In this case study, we explore how DuPont’s BETAMATE 2090 has been successfully used to improve the structural integrity of Volkswagen battery packs.

THE PROJECT:

Strengthening Volkswagen battery packs with DUPONT ™ BETAMATE 2090

Volkswagen, like many other market-leading automakers, is in the process of electrifying its vehicles. This is an ongoing transformation in the company, with the goal of moving to all-electric technology by 2030. The performance of Volkswagen’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform, which enables its electric vehicle technology, depends on the structural integrity of the battery pack. A structurally robust battery pack protects both the battery and the vehicle occupant by providing impact resistance. This is where DuPont’s BETAMATE 2090 structural adhesive becomes important.

THE ISSUE:

Volkswagen needed a battery pack solution that would provide:

  • Durability, rigidity, and performance in battery frame impact
  • Greater flexibility in the production process
  • Structural integrity
  • Fast application for short cycle times
  • No surface pretreatment to reduce time and cost
  • Single-component, cold-crosslinking by absence of oven in assembly line

Traditional solutions, such as welds or mechanical joints, could not provide these features. In particular, they could not guarantee the desired structural bonding and cycle time.

THE SOLUTION:

DUPONT ™ engineers considered all the requirements and, through innovative research and development, were able to formulate BETAMATE ™ 2090 structural adhesive to solve the Volkswagen challenge.

BETAMATE 2090 provides:

  • High rigidity and strength
  • Great flexibility – high elastic modulus
  • Capability of both automated and manual application
  • Adhesion without primer – no pretreatment required
  • Cold curing – no oven required
  • 20 minutes of open time

BENEFITS:

By using BETAMATE 2090, Volkswagen was able to improve the structural integrity of the battery pack frames by enhancing stiffness, durability, and crash performance, increasing process efficiency, and reducing cycle times.

They now regularly use BETAMTE 2090 on the MEB platforms of various vehicle models, such as the ID.3. The company now also uses the solution for battery pack repair.
