Key Points
- Tosa, a combustion prototype from PoliMi Motorcycle Factory, participated in the Italian Speed Championship round at the Mugello circuit, in the Moto3 category.
- The motorcycle integrates advanced solutions in composite material made with consumables and technical support provided by Mascherpa.
- About the80% structures, including fairings, tail, fenders, seat e swingarm, were produced by students from the Politecnico di Milano in traditional carbon, woven or recycled.
- The project is part of the Mascherpa NEXT initiative, dedicated to the transfer of know-how between industry and university.
- The second debut at Mugello highlighted a progressive improvement in performance, with the motorcycle’s timing and behavior improving throughout the day.
The second debut at Mugello
The Mugello circuit hosted the second official debut of the PoliMi Motorcycle Factory, which participated with its petrol prototype in the last round of the Italian Speed Championship (CIV) in the Moto3 category.
Participation in the CIV represents a significant phase of technical verification and direct comparison with a professional context for the team, after years of development in academic motorsport.
Tosa: the combustion prototype from PoliMi Motorcycle Factory
The PoliMi Motorcycle Factory is an educational project parallel to the academic activities of the Politecnico di Milano. It consists of about 100 students engaged in the design and production of two racing motorcycles:
- Tosa, the combustion prototype;
- Bambara, the electric motorcycle.
Participation in the CIV Moto3 with the petrol prototype represents a central stage in the team’s journey, where research and experimentation translate into direct application on the track.
Composite materials and consumables provided by Mascherpa
Mascherpa provided the students of the PoliMi Motorcycle Factory with all the consumables necessary for the lamination processes of composite materials, essential for the construction of the load-bearing structures of the petrol prototype. About the80% of the motorcycle is indeed made up of carbon parts:
- swingarm;
- fairings;
- fenders;
- seat;
- tail.
The components were produced in traditional carbon, woven or recycled, using materials and technologies identical to those used in professional motorsport.
Il supporto Mascherpa ha incluso:
- vacuum bags;
- release films;
- aerators;
- vacuum pumping systems;
- materials for bag drawing.
Essential elements to replicate advanced production cycles, ensuring quality, precision, and repeatability of the processes.
In-house production at the Politecnico
All composite work was carried out by the students within the Politecnico di Milano. Thanks to the materials provided by Mascherpa, the PoliMi Motorcycle Factory was able to internally produce the entire motorcycle structure, developing technical skills.
This approach allows students to move from theory to practice, transforming the laboratory phase into a real production environment.
Field support and performance
Mascherpa’s support accompanied the team up to the days immediately preceding the debut, ensuring that Tosa was ready for the Mugello event.
During the race day, the prototype showed a steady improvement in performance: times continued to improve and the motorcycle’s dynamic behavior evolved positively session after session.
Looking to the future with Mascherpa Next
The collaboration with PoliMi Motorcycle Factory is part of the Mascherpa Next program, which promotes the transfer of know-how and support for university and youth projects in the field of material selection and applied engineering.
From the initial design phases to track testing, Mascherpa continues to share its experience with a clear goal: to help future engineers transform knowledge into concrete innovation.
