The Revel Sailing Team, composed of students from the La Spezia University Campus and the University of Genoa, continues its path of growth and innovation in university sailing and the marine sector. After successfully presenting their projects at the 1001VelaCup and the Venice Boat Show, the team now reaches a new milestone: exhibiting at the Genoa Boat Show 2025, one of the most important international events dedicated to boating and naval design.
We are proud of the achievements of the Revel team, and to see how the expertise of our experts and the materials provided have contributed to transforming the idea of a group of students into a boat capable of combining performance, innovation, and sustainability.
The Genoa Boat Show
Today, Tuesday, September 16th, the Genoa Boat Show begins and will end on September 23rd. With over 60 editions behind it, the Genoa Boat Show represents a global reference point for shipbuilding, design and nautical innovation. Each year it brings together exhibitors, universities, designers, and industry professionals from around the world, becoming the ideal place to present new solutions and address future challenges.
For the Revel Sailing Team, being able to exhibit their boat in such a high-level context means bringing the work done in the university setting to an international audience, gaining visibility and recognition in a sector that is increasingly looking towards sustainability and the use of advanced materials.
Alba, the Skiff that Combines Performance and Sustainability
The boat that the Revel sailing team presented at the Genoa Boat Show is called Alba: a skiff designed to integrate maximum performance with reduced environmental impact, giving particular importance to the theme of sustainability.
The hull is the result of teamwork that combined engineering passion, materials research and experimentation through innovative processes. The result is a boat that integrates natural and synthetic fibers, recycled cores, and bio-based resins, reducing environmental impact and showing how the future of boating can be built on more responsible foundations.
Alba is not just a prototype, but a concrete demonstration of how innovation in materials can open new routes for university sailing and future nautical design.
The Composite Materials that Made Alba Possible
Mascherpa’s contribution to the project was expressed both in the supply of quality composite materials and in the sharing of technical know-how essential to guide the team in choosing and applying the most suitable solutions.
Here are the key solutions used for the Alba skiff:
- Saertex fibers (flax, glass, and carbon): a mix that allowed for achieving lightness, rigidity, and strength while reducing environmental impact;
- Recycled PET structural core – 3DCore GR HX 75: improves rigidity, reduces resin consumption, and contributes to the circular economy;
- Huntsman Araldite resins and adhesives: LY 5052 MBC resin with bio-based content and Araldite 2015-1 and Araldite 2051 adhesives ensured mechanical performance and reliability even in marine conditions;
- Diatex consumable materials: essential for optimizing the infusion process, reducing defects and obtaining a high-quality laminate.
Thanks to this combination of technologies, Alba represents a concrete example of how composite materials for boating can open new perspectives in terms of design and sustainability.
A Shared Achievement
The exhibition at the Genoa Boat Show 2025 is not just a goal achieved, but also confirmation of the value of a collaboration that combines academic training and industry work knowledge.
For the students, it means giving visibility to a project that originates from the university and reaches an international stage.
For Mascherpa, it means seeing their products and know-how become an integral part of an innovation journey involving new generations of designers.
Mascherpa NEXT: Building Bridges between Academia and Industry
This partnership is part of the broader Mascherpa NEXT program, which encompasses initiatives through which we support university teams and research projects, offering not only quality products but also technical expertise and a long-term vision.
With Alba and its presence at the Genoa Boat Show, we can demonstrate how innovation, performance, and sustainability can sail together, charting new routes for the boating industry of the future.
