Mineral oils are naturally occurring fluids that are extracted for use in the industrial production of different types of materials or as lubricants for engines. The most famous mineral oil is petroleum, and it is from it that all others are derived.
Mineral oils: physical properties
This type of oil is characterized by many advantageous aspects:
- It is an oil that does not have to undergo an additional refining process. In fact, the result is a less expensive base oil and a cheaper final lubricant.
- Mineral oils are characterized by multifunctionality. A wide variety of vehicles are designed for maintenance with these oils, so these lubricants will be able to keep such vehicles powerful and well protected due to their great properties.
- Finally, they are aggressive to most of the sealing materials found in vehicles. Detergents used in synthetic engine oils may be too strong for the fragile seals in older vehicles, and can cause leaks and reduced performance.
Industrial applications
The industrial applications of mineral oils are many:
- Lubricants for gears and gearboxes
- Closed gear oils
- Anti-seize pastes
- Bearing grease
- Open gear greases
- Air compressor oils
